What Leaping is, and why it works.

Leaping turns a 15-minute self-assessment into a year of focused development โ€” for the individual, the team, and the leader. This page explains the science behind the score, and the value hidden inside each menu.

The assessment

A model built for validity, not vibes.

Leaping measures 34 talents grouped into four categories โ€” Intellectual, Motivating, Influencing and Connecting. Every talent maps to decades of research on strengths, leadership and high performance, curated by TalentInsights over 20+ years of practice with teams in business, culture and sport.

We deliberately reject single-answer Likert tests, which suffer from social desirability bias and central-tendency effects. Instead, Leaping uses a forced-choice ipsative slider: for every question you weigh two talents against each other on a 1โ€“10 scale. The strength of your lean โ€” not just the direction โ€” is converted into a graded score for each talent, so a near-tie and a full commitment produce very different signals.

Scores are normalised against the maximum a talent could earn given how often it appeared in your questions, so no talent is rewarded for being asked about more than another. Category strength is the average of your top three talents in that category, which surfaces where you genuinely cluster strength rather than regressing to the mean.

Alongside talents we measure the three drivers of intrinsic motivation from Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan): autonomy, competence and relatedness. These tell you not just what you're good at, but under what conditions you'll keep growing.

The result is a profile you can defend: reproducible, comparable across colleagues, and grounded in published behavioural science.

Quality & ethics

What we promise, and what we don't.

Leaping is a development tool, not a selection or ranking tool. We do not produce hire/fire scores, IQ proxies or personality verdicts. Every score is a starting point for a conversation, never an end point.

Profiles are owned by the individual. Sharing with a team or a manager is opt-in per surface, and you can revoke at any time from your settings. Aggregated team views never expose an individual's raw answers.

The model is versioned. When we tune scoring, change a question, or add talents, your historical profile is preserved so you can see how you've changed over time without the rug being pulled.
